Neil Shapiro 5k Walk Run

Neil Shapiro was born and raised in Winthrop; he was a friend and mentor to many. He had atrue love for his community of Winthrop.  He was a long time, dedicatedDramatic Arts Teacher and Director (as well as an assistant girls Basketball Coach) at Winthrop High and Middle schools, where he touched the lives of many students.  He passed at the young age of 48 from a rare blood disease called Myelofibrosis.

To celebrate his life and commemorate the 10thanniversary of his passing, former students, friends and family are planning a 5K race at Deer Island in Winthrop in his honor.  

All funds raised through the Neil Shapiro Memorial 5K will benefit the Winthrop High School Dramatic Arts Department (via our partner, the Viking Pride Foundation). Our goalis to raise enough money to purchase new Sound and Lighting technology for the auditorium at the High School. Please join us in making that happen and remembering our teacher, mentor and friend – Neil Shapiro.
